Dragonfly Spotting

On our walk back from RSPB Old Moor today, we stopped off for a spot of lunch in a sunny clearing and found ourselves surrounded by dragonflies. Some were flitting up and down the trail and others were sunning themselves on the path a stones throw from our bench. Most of the dragonflies were camera shy, but this fella was most obliging. I believed him to be a male Common Darter - Sympetrum striolatum.

I wanted to share an excellent resource I use often, which has helped me ID countless dragonflies in the past - British Dragonfly Society. The 'identification help' section is fantastic as it allows you to filter by flight month and colour (as this is often the only info you might have) and this method is yet to fail me.

Happy dragonfly spotting!
